While a family was enjoying a walk outdoors with their dog Winston through the forest of Diamond Jubilee Wood, in Leicestershire, England, they never imagined that he would fall into a tunnel next to the path hidden by a holly bush.

Everything seems to indicate that Winston was trapped in the thick mud of the narrow tunnels made by badgers and could not get out, after his curiosity got him into this mess.

Winston’s adoptive mother Heather informed the various rescue teams in the county, but Winston’s rescue would prove very difficult as badgers are protected by law. For this reason, it is recommended to all people that, when a dog is missing, they should wait 48 hours before taking any action.

Heather said, according to the BBC :

“The last few days have been horrible. We felt so helpless knowing that Winston was trapped.”

The woman approached the authorities to get a permit, but did not get a positive response, until good news arrived on Tuesday. After almost three days, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said they answered the call before noon, and they did not hesitate to arrive at the scene.

The firefighters arrived with various specialist search teams, and were also accompanied by a team from the RSPCA .

Heather added:

“When the firefighters started looking for him, we really thought we had already lost him and were mentally preparing for the worst.”

Using sound and locating devices, they were able to locate Winston’s muffled barking and pinpointed exactly where to dig so they could rescue him. The team had to call for help to continue the excavation, as the rescue had to be done slowly to prevent everything from collapsing.

Heather commented:

“I burst into more tears when we finally saw his little face sticking out of the mud.”

After five hours, rescue teams were able to free Winston and pulled him out of the dirt where he had been trapped for 60 hours.

Winston was immediately handed over to RSPCA officers for examination of his condition, and he was later reunited with Heather.

When she saw her, the first thing she did was roll onto her back to get her belly rubbed, and her mother didn’t hesitate to do so. Plus, he was showered with affection, and he most likely got a lot of dog shampoo, since he was stuck in the mud for almost three days.

Thanks to the good work of the rescue teams, Winston was able to return to his home, and now he only enjoys the company of his loved ones.

According to Heather, the three-year-old puppy was very tired and in shock, but over the days he made a full recovery.
