Shelter workers risk their lives to care for more than 1,300 animals in Ukraine
The invasion perpetrated by Russia in Ukraine has left many people affected, but also, directly or indirectly, it has complicated the lives of animals a bit, which have been abandoned or left in a shelter by their owners.
Tamara Tarnawska, a former journalist turned shelter founder, along with her team, are risking their lives to care for their animals.
The shelter called SOS Animal Shelter , is located in Kiev and, despite the war, they care for and feed more than 1000 dogs and 300 cats.
Shelter workers care for animals in Ukraine
Although the city is under war attacks by the Russian army and no one is safe, this group of workers does not want to abandon their animals. Also, supplies for both people and animals are hard to come by, but nothing stops them in their beautiful work.
Tamara has dedicated a large part of her life to saving and rescuing animals in need and she is not going to leave them now that they need her most. For this reason, she, along with three other shelter workers, made the decision to stay to help protect the dogs and cats of the place.
Most of the animals are scared and many of them are hungry because of the shortage of food, but they know that help is on the way. Luckily, Tomi Tomek, president of the SOS Chats Noiraigue foundation , is collecting donations for the shelter and is keeping in touch with Tamara.
The foundation wrote in a statement :
We hope from the bottom of our hearts that Tamara, the animals and her team survive this terrible war. We are currently collecting donations for SOS -Animals kyiv”.
They also added that many new animals are coming to the shelter, as some people fleeing the country leave them behind.
The foundation also makes it clear to people that, even if the situation is resolved, Tamara will need a lot of money to care for the animals. Since they will need to pay for medical expenses, food, and the physical and structural repairs that this war caused.
Other animal welfare organizations from Ukraine and other countries are helping with financial donations and food for animals in need.
They recently delivered large bags of food to the shelter, and an emotional video shows the dogs wagging their tails in excitement and gratitude.
The video description says:
“Animals in shelters need our help. And we will be extremely grateful to anyone who can help us survive this difficult time for all of us.”
Tamara and her team will continue to help the animals under her care, as they are part of her family.
Although some people believe that they are crazy for being left behind, the reality is that they are true heroes and many people recognize them as such.
