Seal breaks into a house, lies on the sofa and displaces the family cat

The Ross family, from Mt Maunganui, New Zealand, recently dealt with an unexpected visit to their home, 150 meters from shore, by a fur seal who just wanted to hang out. Coco, the family cat, was forced to leave her home while the curious intruder was inside.

While Jenn Ross was in the gym, and her children Noah and Ari were sleeping upstairs, the seal was prowling the halls like the new family pet. Her husband, Phil Ross, who happens to be a marine biologist, said that when Jenn got into the car very early that morning, she noticed something that barked under her and dragged her paws away from her.

He said, according to The Guardian :

“She thought it was someone’s dog…and she really didn’t give it much thought.”

The seal, which Phil identified as a 10-month-old fur seal, was apparently able to somehow get into the house and proceeded to terrorize Coco, but the man suspects his cat may have been the main culprit.

Phil says that Coco is very territorial and likes to tease dogs, and that surely after Jenn left, Coco and the little sea lion met outside, had their confrontation, and then followed her home, where she was wandering around for a while. hour.

“The cat would have gone to defend her territory and obviously the seal wasn’t as intimidated as some dogs, so Coco must have run around the side of the house, towards the cat flap, and the seal must have followed her.”

When Jenn returned at 7 in the morning, she ran into the sea lion in her living room, and when the animal saw her, it got scared and ran into the guest room, there it spent some time, and then on the sofa, before Jenn managed to get her out the front door and into the garden.

A ranger from the Department of Conservation showed up at 10am to take the fur seal back to the sea.

Phil told Fox :

“Coco hid in the neighbor’s house and didn’t come home until the seal was gone. So for the next day, she didn’t go downstairs where the seal was. We didn’t see the seal/cat interaction, but it was clearly something Coco didn’t enjoy.”

Obviously, Coco was traumatized by the encounter she had with the sea lion, and it took her some time to recover from the bitter experience, but surely from now on she will think twice before facing one of these animals again.

Phil finally said:

“The big joke is that this is really the only family emergency where it would be helpful to have a marine biologist in the house. I really missed my time to shine.”
