Man took care of a baby squirrel hoping to free her, but she never left him
Two years ago, while Paul was driving home from dropping his daughter off at school, he stumbled upon a somewhat curious scene. Two birds were attacking a baby squirrel that had apparently fallen from its nest, so Paul knew he had to help the frightened little creature.
Paul told Bored Panda :
“When I was at a red light, I noticed a baby squirrel running away from 2 birds that were attacking her.”
Paul jumped into action immediately and rescued the squirrel, but she was scared at first and made noises so Paul wouldn’t get close to her. Then, the man went in search of her nest, so that her mother would take care of her, but apparently it did not work.
RESCUED BABY SQUIRREL WON’T LET GO OF MAN WHO HELPED HER
Paul said:
“I tried to put her back near her nest, but her mother never got her back. And after waiting more than 9 hours, I decided to take her home for the night. She tried to go back to her nest the next day, but her mother didn’t want her.”
Seeing that his mother had no interest in getting her calf back, Paul decided to take care of her until she was old enough and strong enough to return to the wild, but things did not go as he expected.
Paul tried to free the little squirrel several times and she kept coming back. When the man realized that she would never leave, he let her climb some trees, so she could experiment. She ran and had a lot of fun, but she kept coming back to him.
Paul said:
“I was so sure that when she saw what it felt like to be free, she would just run away. But she always comes back to me. Or she runs to me if she sees that I stray too far from her.”
Since then, Stella, as he called her, has been living with Paul and his family. The man is a retired veteran who spends all day at home, so she Stella is never alone. He is always taking care of her, since he is an animal that requires a lot of attention.
He said:
“I make sure to feed her very healthy foods. I eat 80% fruits and vegetables. He loves avocados. All squirrels love avocados. They would do anything for them. The other 20% are nuts. Walnuts, almonds, peanuts. Roasted and without salt. Never give squirrels raw peanuts or any kind of raw nuts. It’s not good for them. It takes away the calcium. And they can get a bone disease.”
Stella is loved by everyone in her home and by those who know her. She is very friendly.
Paul added:
“Everyone wants to give Stella her favorite treats. She loves receiving visitors. She Even she has 2 dogs that come to see her every day! They are definitely friends.”
Paul cannot imagine life without Stella, and he and his family are very happy to have her in their lives.
He said:
“I tell everyone that I rescued her, but I can tell there are times when I feel like she is the one who rescued me! The love that returns to me and the joy of it makes me more than happy and grateful ».
