Stray Rescue of St. Louis always puts animal safety first, so when they got a call about a homeless puppy sleeping rough in the middle of a terrible heat wave, they asked for photos before take any other action to help the dog in a timely manner.

It took only a few minutes for rescuer Donna Lochmann to get to the right place. She couldn’t find the dog at first, so she changed direction at the last moment and saw it. The exhausted dog was trying to keep cool in an alley, but it seemed that he had given up.

Donna told The Dodo :

“The photo this person sent us showed the dog lying down. It was hard to tell, but it seemed like you could see the hip bones of him. So I knew it was definitely worth checking out.”

Upon approaching, the woman realized the seriousness of the furry’s condition and that he needed help immediately. Fortunately, Donna put the pup in her car and drove him to the safety of the shelter. The staff acted quickly to make sure he was healthy and hydrated.

Donna recalls:

“I saw him there, lying on the street. He was lying in the water coming out of a gutter, probably to cool off because it was so hot.”

Donna was deeply affected after seeing the defenseless canine alone on the street, without energy or hope for the future, and she knew she had to intervene. For years, she has worked tirelessly to help animals in need.

The rescuer added:

“When I got to the end of the alley, he must have heard me. I saw him raise his head, look around her, and then drop it to the sidewalk as if he’d given up completely. She just killed me. I said to myself, ‘There’s no way I’m leaving this dog here.

Luckily, the downed dog had no trouble being rescued by Donna. He even arranged to walk to his vehicle without a leash.

When he got into the vehicle, the pup felt right at home. The adorable pup, later nicknamed Curby, willingly accepted his “journey to freedom” to safety, according to the shelter.

Curby loves his foster family and his dog brother, who loves to snuggle with him. Since his arrival, the canine has transformed physically and emotionally and has also become more playful.
