Bakers Delight customers hit back at calls to boycott Aussie chain after founder Roger Gillespie back No campaign on Voice

A major problem with a plan to boycott Bakers Delight has been revealed as a growing number of Aussies refuse to follow ‘woke‘ calls to avoid the chain.

Calls for customers to steer clear of their local Bakers Delight store were sparked by a revelation that its founder Roger Gillespie was among the many wealthy people who have donated to the Advance Australia (AA) lobby group.

The bakery boss told the Australian Financial Review he had donated $20,000 to AA and $14,000 to the Liberal Party in late 2022 because he ‘backed the group due to its position on the (Voice) referendum’.

Mr Gillespie’s support of the No Vote sparked fury from left-leaning Aussies who called for a boycott of his company on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Some have since pointed out that Bakers Delight consists of franchises with more than 500 stores across Australia.

They argued individual franchisees shouldn’t have to lose business over a boycott of the company’s conservative founder.

‘Bakers Delight stores are franchises. A boycott will achieve nothing. No one thought this through,’ one user posted on X.

‘Clearly, boycotts don’t work in this country, as most major businesses are monopolies and alternative choices are limited,’ another wrote.

Others were vocal of their support for Mr Gillespie and the chain, with one X user posting a photo of a queue outside his local Bakers Delight on Tuesday.

‘What is the opposite of go woke go broke?’ he captioned the photo.

‘Good luck to #BakersDelight for standing to woke leftists mob. Reward through increased patronage duly earned,’ another wrote.

Another user showed her support by buying a cake from her local store.

‘Bakers Delight co-founder supported the Advance Australia campaign against ‘The Voice’. The left are boycotting the bakery,’ she wrote.

‘Just went & bought this lovely iced walnut cake, bakery completely packed. Coles packed & Woolies pretty much desolate.’

‘Hubby just got back with our daily Bakers Delight eats. I’m making us cuppa’s,’ another user commented.

Former federal MP Craig Kelly said those backing the boycott were ‘out-numbered’ as he shared a haul of Bakers Delight items he had purchased.

‘I must thank all the misguided leftists for reuniting me with the wonderful products from BAKERS DELIGHT and giving this great Australian company such publicity,’ he captioned a photo of bread, rolls and scones.

‘What the misguided left forget, with their counter-productive Bakers Delight boycott, is that they are out-numbered – as the referendum demonstrated 61% to 39%.’

However, many left-leaning Aussies said they would take their business elsewhere.

‘Bakers Delight, it turns out, are not delightful at all. Boycott,’ one wrote on X.

‘Will not be buying anything from Bakers Delight again,’ said another.

A third said: ‘This guy must be super confident his political views won’t affect sales’.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Bakers Delight for comment.
